Customised solution for Kerteminde Forsyning The challenge: Efficient monitoring of compost temperature
arrow_backTil oversigten6. august 2025 | JUMO Denmark A/S
In 2024, Kerteminde Forsyning (KF) approached JUMO with a specific challenge: They needed a reliable solution to measure and monitor the temperature of their compost. Previously, they had been using a temperature sensor from another supplier, but this quickly proved to be faulty and unsuitable for their needs.
Temperature measurement is crucial in the process of turning garden waste into nutrient-rich compost, which typically takes 3-6 months. To ensure efficient and safe decomposition, the temperature must be maintained at 70°C, but at the same time it must not exceed 80°C as the risk of spontaneous combustion increases significantly.
Therefore, it was essential for operations manager Bo Hvidkær to find a solution that could protect both the plant and the employees.
At JUMO, we see every customer request as an opportunity to create customised solutions, and we immediately set about developing a solution that would meet KF's needs.
The solution and implementation: Customised technology and efficient installation
Based on a previous solution we had developed for wood chip monitoring, we customised the technology for KF's compost application. The solution was created in close co-operation with JUMO Sweden AB and JUMO Nederland B.V. and included:
- Four temperature sensors to measure the temperature of the compost.
- A PLC receiver for data collection and control.
- A customised Cloud system, developed by our team in the Netherlands, for analysis and data logging.
This solution ensured:
- Temperature measurement for optimal compost decomposition via wireless technology.
- Self-ignition control with quick identification and alarm functions.
- Flexible integration, either as Plug-and-Play or as an embeddable solution.
- Long battery life with up to four years of maintenance-free operation.
- Comprehensive service and support from our experts offering calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting.
After a successful test of the first sensor, three more sensors were installed and integrated with the existing solution. Operations Manager Bo Hvidkær had prepared the location of the receiver, making the installation efficient.
At KF's request, the grey B heads of the sensors were replaced with a neon colour to improve visibility in the compost heaps. This makes it easier to move the sensors when turning the compost for aeration or to avoid self-ignition at critical temperature limits.
Bo Hvidkær said:
"The co-operation has been absolutely optimal, with the international team delivering a solution that works perfectly from the start."
We offer ongoing on-site service, giving KF the assurance that the system is always working optimally.
The result: Sustainability and knowledge sharing
With the new solution, KF can monitor the temperature in their compost in real time. Alarms are sent directly to your phone or email, making it possible to act proactively and ensure a stable and safe composting process.
However, KF's ambitions go beyond efficient operations. As part of their focus on sustainability, they want to share their cloud data with local schools. This initiative brings technology into the classroom and inspires future generations to think green and innovative.
Conclusion: A solution that creates value every day
At JUMO, it's not just about delivering a product - it's about delivering a solution that precisely fits the customer's needs and makes a tangible difference in their everyday lives.
This case is an example of how we work as a knowledge partner - always focusing on innovation, quality and customised solutions that create value. Our solution for KF is designed for a variety of applications and of course also works optimally for wood chips.
We are proud to be part of Kerteminde Forsyning's journey towards a more sustainable future and look forward to helping more customers realise their goals through innovative solutions.
